Kiteboarding open in Noordjik

Arriving in Noordjik, with the expectations of a normal kite event, I was greeted by an event with a different focus. Fun!!

And fun it was, with a great vibe on the beach and wind to entertain the large crowds on the beach, the Kiteboarding open seemed to be a success on all fronts. I met up with some Peter Lynn team members, talked about all the new developments and shared some of our experiences with each other and with the public.

Most noticeable at this event was the stage on the beach. Of course, always traveling with kites and guitar, I ended up jamming some tunes as the sun went down.

Only one negative aspect for me, and note to self: “Never go to Holland without a full wetsuit”! The first day I froze in my East coast of south africa suit… Thanks to Marjin from peter Lynn for lending me his suit for the remaining 2 days! But by the time I left, the weather was warming up again.

On my last day I tested some prototypes which I will tell you  more about in my next post…

Next destination, Italy, with test kites in tow.

Losing the straps… and the fins

Last Week I decided to recycle an old twintip by using it as a wake skate. I’ve done a bit of strapless on a surf board, but never on a small twintip.

So i grabbed a pair of old running shoes and gave this a go.

Well first of all, respect to all those strapless wakeskate guys out there. You make it look easy!

It was fun to have such a loose board where the rail is everything…

had no problem staying upwind,

But shift your weight around and it becomes like an ice skating ring…

Managed to try some stuff …

And some spectacular wipe outs of course…

 

I might glue some foam to the top of that twintip and do this more regularly

I recomend you try this out. Now I need to work on some board skills!

Unusual sight … Stacking kites

Two days ago, it looked like we were gonna get one of those light wind days where the wind just doesn’t pick up beyond 12 knots. So I decided to Stack my 12m and 15m  Peter Lynn Chargers (Which are C kite foils) and give it a go. I had done this years before with the old Guerilla models (around 2003) and knew that it was one of the few kites out there where stacking is feasible. On the old Guerilla, the turning became very slow, and going upwind very hard due to the low end grunt.

So here I am 8 years later trying it out again, and sure enough the stack went up.

The low grunt was there as expected… I mean technically I had 27m of kite up in the air. but amazingly, the turning wasn’t as bad as i expected. I actually managed to loop the stack on the beach.

So I headed out. My main purpose was to test the low wind ability of such an experiment. i really had to dig the edge, and also make sure I didn’t drop it as it could have gotten messy trying to relaunch. Luckily the stability of the arc kite really helped in that department.

However the wind didn’t co operate and started picking up as i hit the water… so i had to depower.

I started throing it around and trying some jumps. and although it was hard to get hight due to the low end grunt, the hang time was pretty insane…

Once it got too much, I took the 15 off and went out with the 12, which is the equivalent of a 9 LEI, must have been around 17/18 knots of wind.
